AUSTRALIAN DEFORESTATION

So, let’s talk about deforestation. It looks to me that Amazon forest de-forestation is a little baby to the loss of trees Australia has due to the bushfires.

Understanding the Extent of Tree Loss and the Call for Reforestation

Deforestation is a pressing environmental issue that impacts ecosystems and contributes to climate change. While the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest often makes headlines, it is crucial to shed light on another significant area affected by the loss of trees: Australia. In recent years, Australia has faced unprecedented challenges due to bushfires, resulting in a staggering amount of tree cover loss. This article delves into the scale of Australian deforestation, the factors driving it, the consequences for CO2 capture, and the urgent need for reforestation efforts to restore the country’s precious natural resources.

Magnitude of Australian Deforestation

From 2001 to 2021, Australia witnessed the loss of a vast 6.26 million hectares (Mha) of tree cover as a result of devastating bushfires. In addition, another 2.47 Mha of tree cover was lost due to various other drivers. Perhaps the most alarming statistic is that in 2020 alone, a staggering 1.96 Mha of tree cover was lost to fires, accounting for a staggering 83% of all tree cover loss that year.

Impact on CO2 Capture

Trees are essential natural allies in the fight against climate change due to their capacity to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2). On average, one tree can absorb approximately 25kg of CO2 per year. Considering the extent of tree cover loss in Australia, it is crucial to comprehend the substantial amount of CO2 capture that has been compromised. The total loss of CO2 capture amounts to a staggering 391,250,000,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide. This staggering number underscores the urgency of taking immediate action to replenish and restore this vital ecosystem.

The Urgent Need for Reforestation

Reversing the detrimental effects of deforestation necessitates a comprehensive and sustained reforestation initiative. To restore the ecosystem, a mind-boggling number of trees need to be planted. Based on the average number of trees per hectare (ranging from 1000 to 2500), an astounding 15,650,000,000 trees are required to replenish.

So, we need one hundred and one ideas of how to continuously plant trees and then more. Here is an example of how US influencers call to action.

We need around 780 actions by MrBeast to recover our previous tree fund and then more.
